Olive Oil and World Health

The obesity rate in the world increased by 23% in the early 1960s. This increase has been very rapid and continues.

There are two main reasons for this increase. The first and most important of these is the rapid growth of the fast food and convenience food industries.

The fast food and convenience food industries have larger portions than before the 1960s. Furthermore, the low prices of this type of food have caused serious increases in demand.

These dishes contain high energy, increased corn syrup and trans fats. Trans fats are unnatural oils and are very harmful to human health.

The second is the decrease in people's physical activities.

Under these circumstances, more calories are consumed than spent. Moreover, these foods contain harmful fats.

This situation caused obesity to become one of the biggest health problems of the 21st century.

On the other hand, especially recipes containing extra virgin olive oil have lower calories. It is also preventive of cardiovascular diseases.

Hopefully the increase in olive oil consumption may decrease obesity rates.

Turkey is the 4th country in the world in olive oil consumption. This ensures that the obesity rate in Turkey is much lower than in many countries.

When viewed from this aspect, Turkey can contribute significantly to the world's health with  existing and ongoing increase in the production of high quality extra virgin olive oil.
